About the Topic:
Bob O'Connor will speak about President Lincoln's bodyguard, Ward Hill Lamon. Lamon was a law partner to Abraham Lincoln in Danville, IL from 1852-1856, as well as his friend and confidant. Lincoln took him with him to Washington, where Lamon served officially as the U.S. Federal Marshal of the District of Columbia.
Mr. O'Connor will explain why Lamon was not at Ford's Theater the night that President Lincoln was shot. He notes that most people he speaks with have never heard about Lamon, so he has considered it his charge to bring his name to light.

About the Speaker:
Bob O'Connor's interest in history goes back to his trip in 1958 to Galesburg, IL where he attended the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Carl Sandburg was the featured speaker.
Mr. O'Connor grew up in Illinois and has worked full and part time as a newspaper reporter, and at other jobs — many that required writing press releases, news articles, or reports. His first published article was written when he was in 7th grade – in an Illinois Historical Society for junior high students.
Mr. O'Connor now lives in Charles Town, West Virginia, where he is retired and a full-time author (of over 15 books!). He has been named finalist four times in national book competition.
In particular, he authored and edited the only book Ward Hill Lamon ever wrote: The Life of Abraham Lincoln as President. Mr. O'Connor found Lamon’s unpublished manuscript at The Huntington Library in California and purchased rights to publish it. The book was published in 2010, with his addition of over 1,700 footnotes and an extensive bibliography. That book was named a finalist in the Indie Book Awards for 2011.
